Type of Craft: Polymer Clay

Tell us in your own words, how you discovered polymer clay and how long have you been using it?

My parents gave me a huge box of Sculpey about 20 yrs. ago. I dabbled with it back then, mostly making dog figurines. Later discovered the Sculpey III in colors and Fimo. Started working more seriously with it about 6 yrs. ago.

Are there any special artists that you can attribute your interest to or that have inspired you?

When I was first starting out, Nutshell News, a miniatures magazine had articles on working with polymer clay written by Bonnie Franklin & Dianna Newburn. Also through this magazine I discovered Maureen Carlson's videos, and she has had a very big influence on me. Also, Donna Kato, Kris Richards, and Cecelia Determan.

What is your specialty?

Figurines of kids and critters with clothes of clay.

Can you tell us why you find polymer clay the expressive medium for you?

There is just so much you can do with it. I can't see ever becoming bored with it because there is always something new to learn.

Have you published any polymer clay books or do you have any in the works?

Not yet, but that is one of my goals!!!

I know it is very difficult to express, but have you won any awards for your polymer clay work?

Not yet.

What are your expectations for the future? Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?

I want to have a multi-faceted career with this clay - writing books, teaching, and having my own line of figurines that are sold everywhere!!! Kind of following in my favorite artist Maureen Carlson's footsteps!!!

Do you have any advice for the beginning polymer clay enthusiasts?

There are so many great books and videos available now. I highly recommend getting some. Then try everything that interests you and be patient. We all improve with practice and should continue to learn and stretch our abilities.

Are you a member of any Polymer Clay group,or any other craft organization?

The NPCG. Locally, there isn't one yet, but now that I've found fellow Vegas artist Lisa Pavelka, there may be one soon!!!

What brands of polymer clay do you prefer and why?

I work mostly with Fimo because I like it's strength and it has a really nice finish once baked. I also use Sculpey III for some things and sometimes combine the two. I will be trying Clay Factory Clay soon after hearing so many good things about it.

Last and most important can you tell us all about you? Your family, your training?

I am working hard at building a home-based business wholesaling my figurines to shops around the country. This enables me to be home with my two children. I have a patient and supportive husband who puts up me when I go nuts trying to get all the orders out on time!!! I have seen several polymer clay artists launch very successful figurine lines and that would be my dream come true. I am thrilled to have met so many wonderful polyclay people online. It has really opened up a whole new world for me. I hope to have my own web site by next month. I think one of the neatest things about the people I've met is their willingness to share their knowledge and experience, and when I have reached my goals, I hope to help others to do the same.
