Type of Craft: Polymer Clay Buttons

Tell us in your own words, how you discovered polymer clay and how long have you been using it?

I have been using Polymer clay since 1995. A friend introduced me to it, and I started out making beads. After making hundreds and hundreds, doing a few shows, etc....I leaned towards doing something with it, that would actually benefit myself. I sew alot, and wanted to incorporate buttons into my designs. One thing lead to another, and now, thats what I make, Clay Buttons!

Are there any special artists that you can attribute your interest to or that have inspired you?

Not really....My neighbor and I, started us a lil business making these buttons....and from there, we have designed all of our own designs, and are selling in a local craft store...and are wanting to go on the WWW with them.

What is your specialty?

Primitive Clay button designs. Anything rustic...old, primitive mainly!

Can you tell us why you find polymer clay the expressive medium for you?

Have you published any polymer clay books or do you have any in the works?

I have bought a few. Back when I was making beads. But now that I am into buttons, I am doing my own thing. Own designs.

I know it is very difficult to express, but have you won any awards for your polymer clay work?

My craft partner and I have done a few local shows. But once our website is finished, we are hoping that will trigger more things down the road.

What are your expectations for the future? Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?

Five years from now...I would like to have been on the net for at least 4 years, and that our Button business be flourishing. We are stay at home mothers, and this is our grocery money, and allows us not to work out of the home!

Do you have any advice for the beginning polymer clay enthusiasts?

Oh yes....Knead the clay...condition it with warm hands, and begin designing, playing, sculpting, experimenting. Check the internet for ideas, buy books, take a class, do whatever you have to, to educate yourself on the wonders of workign with this product. I LOVE IT!!!

Are you a member of any Polymer Clay group,or any other craft organization?

Not as of right now! I am wanting to get into a group of some kind though.

What brands of polymer clay do you prefer and why?

I use whatever I can find! Sculpey, Fimo, Premo...They all work well for what I use them for. However, in my experience, I choose the sculpey for softness and easy managability. However, if making crisp designs, I would go with the Fimo.

Last and most important can you tell us all about you? Your family, your training?

Well, I am 31 years of age. I am married to a wonderful husband, and have one child as of right now. My son, whom is 18 mon. old, keeps me hoppin, when I am not creating designs. I live in West Virginia, and live in the country. My neighbor/friend/craftpartner, is whom I craft with, and have a business with. She herself has two children, ages 2 and 8 mon. old. The kids keep us hoppin, but we try and craft at night, so we don't take away from them thru the day. Thats about it....Just Neighbors, thats us!
