ARLENE THAYER

Your Company Name: Creative Crafts & Gems (Founder - Polymer Clay Central)
Email Address/Web Page: athayer@azstarnet.com
City & State: Green Valley, Arizona
Type of Craft: Polymer Clay and many others

Tell us in your own words, how you discovered polymer clay and how long have you been using it?

I saw a vase in Michaels. It was a white vase with big yellow daisys on it. It was also very expensive. I thought I could make it if I could just find the right clay. I was looking for ceramic clay when I found Super Sculpey. I shaped each petal, fired them, painted them and glued them on the pot. They are still on there. This was 2 years ago.

Are there any special artists that you can attribute your interest to or that have inspired you?

Nan Roche's book was my first. I guess all the fine artists featured were my inspiration. Now I can't say for sure. Each time I come across a new artist, I am inspired and excited about their techniques. CZC is about as inspirational as they get.

What is your specialty?

Whatever I feel like doing at the time. I like to cover things like voltive candles, corn forks..anything that can be covered.

Can you tell us why you find polymer clay the expressive medium for you?

I am an oil artists. I have been in shows, but never really liked selling my work. I love to paint and don't do enough of it. Polymer Clay is fun. If I can create something with it, all the better. I enjoy making canes and seeing the outcome. I don't care much for making beads, but there are many things one can make with "clay".

Have you published any polymer clay books or do you have any in the works?

The only thing I published is "Polymer Clay Central." Thanks to everyone out there.

I know it is very difficult to express, but have you won any awards for your polymer clay work?

ME? Hardly!

What are your expectations for the future? Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?

I hope to take some classes in polymer clay. I have never been to one. Five years from now, I may be into something else, but I will always love polymer clay.

Do you have any advice for the beginning polymer clay enthusiasts?

Get some books, read the newsgroup, visit all the polymer clay sites, especially mine. Experiment with all the different brands of polymer clay and learn about the benefits of each.

Are you a member of any Polymer Clay group,or any other craft organization?

Yes, the NPCG.

What brands of polymer clay do you prefer and why?

I mostly use Fimo for canes, but lately have been using Sculpey and CFC with good results. Sculpey is very good for small figurines, but leaves more fingerprints than Fimo.

Last and most important can you tell us all about you? Your family, your training?

I have been married for three years after being widowed for five. My husband Richard is my biggest fan and a wonderful critic (except that he likes everything). I lived in Maryland all my life until moving to Arizona after I was married. We have seven children between us. All grown and about three still in college. I worked for the Federal Government for 18 years in Maryland. I do not have any formal art training. Just what I have taught myself. I am enjoying "retirement" and traveling.
