Tell us in your own words, how you discovered polymer clay and how long have you been using it?

About 20 years ago I saw 2 ladies making flower brooches out of fimo clay. I myself was already making dolls from breadpaste (don't know if this the correct word) and thought I would give Fimo a try. Almost no one knew about the material and I have told and explained people about it hundreds of times now when I was displaying my dolls at fairs.

Are there any special artists that you can attribute your interest to or that have inspired you?

I'm an autodidact (self-taught).

What is your specialty?

I like to make girls mostly. You can dress them up so nicely with dresses, hats and all kinds of other decorations.

Can you tell us why you find polymer clay the expressive medium for you?

You can mix your favourite colors. The material is very easy to work with and also very strong. I bake the dolls in a seperate oven in my garage because the smell that comes from baking them isn't a very healthy one.

Have you published any polymer clay books or do you have any in the works?

In 1997 my book "Het Grote Fimoboek van A tot Z" was published. In The Netherlands you can buy it in the bookshop, hobbyshops and on fairs. You can also loan the book from the library. You can order the book directly from me. The cost will be $25 including postage and you can e-mail me for more details. The book holds 40 A4 format pages with more than 100 pictures. Sometimes I write an article for the magazine "Poppenblad", a hobby magazine in The Netherlands.

I know it is very difficult to express, but have you won any awards for your polymer clay work?

I never really entered any competitions. I was 'discovered' by a company called Goldina Art and made 24 designs for little dolls. All these little dolls represent a different herb and the dolls are put on the corresponding boxes, like paprika and pepper. The originals were then copied in China and the whole set was sold as a collectors item. I also made "25 Children of the World" for a German firm. They were sold as a collectors item in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and England.

What are your expectations for the future? Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?

7. To live in eternity, in love and peace. I would like to make people happy and spoil them with my dolls. If I wear pink clothes I'll make pink dolls, when I wear blue I make blue dolls!

Do you have any advice for the beginning polymer clay enthusiasts?

  • Allways use your favourite colors
  • Only make things you enjoy yourself also, that way you keep enthousiastic about it.
  • make your own cplace in your house where you can work in peace and quiet
  • I use a marble plateau. When it's cold I warm up the plateau first. That works much better
  • If the clay is too hard I put it in a little plastic bag and than in a cup of warm water. After that you can mix more easily.
  • For the making of hair I use a garlicpress
  • Be proud of yourself and of what you make

Are you a member of any Polymer Clay group,or any other craft organization?

No, I do enter fairs if I have enough dolls in stock. Most of the time I sell out completely.

What brands of polymer clay do you prefer and why?

Fimo clay from Eberhard Faber. Easy to harden in the oven and beautiful colors. Also strong enough to wear.

Last and most important can you tell us all about you? Your family, your training?

My frisian name Tjitske means "girl of the people". I'm married to Cees and mother of 2 sons, Klaas, 29, and Simon, 26. I work as a secretary 3 days a week. My biggest hobby is making romantic dolls out of clay (maybe because I already have 2 sons!) Thing I want to do most is travel around the world with a big basket full of presents and spoil everyone. I love to wear outrageous clothes and I'm always in a happy mood. There are always great things happening in my life. Now my son is putting my 'girls' on the Internet and it's giving me alot of pleasure. We live in The Netherlands, Europe in the city of Den Haag where our government is also. Den Haag is the 3rd largest city in The Netherlands and is near the coast. My husband and I also like to walk on the beach with our British bulldog Bully.
